Welcome to Caroline Co-op, our home

About Caroline Co-op

Our Members, both families and singles from a wide range of social, cultural and economic backgrounds, enjoy an environment that encourages respect for one another and participation in co-op life. Like all co-ops, there is no landlord. The people (Members) who live here run the Co-op through a democratically elected volunteer Board of Directors, Committees and Membership Meetings. Since Members are responsible for running the Co-op, they are required to volunteer a few hours each month. This may take the form of sitting on the Board, participating in a Committee, or volunteering during events and activities. All Members are obligated to attend regular Members' meetings, held at least twice a year.

Benefits

Once you become a Member of a housing co-op, you will benefit from affordable housing and security, as rent is controlled by its Members and all Members have voting rights in important decisions. In fact, as a Member, you vote on the annual budget that sets housing charges for the coming year, and you can run to become part of the Board of Directors.

About Co-ops

Housing co-operatives provide not-for-profit housing for their Members. The Members do not hold equity in their housing. If they move, their home is returned to the co-op to be offered to another individual or family who needs an affordable home. Because co-ops charge their Members only enough to cover operating expenses, repairs, and reserves, they can offer housing that is much more affordable than average private sector rental costs. Co-op housing also offers security. Co-ops are controlled by their Members who have a vote in decisions about their housing. There is no outside landlord.
